Several Stories in a Stone: 150 Years of Light in Valašské Meziříčí
Drawing on a 150 year history from the 1850’s to early 2000’s, this piece represents a selection of historical glass lights from the Czech-based S. Reich & Co. lighting company lineage that have been formed into “stone”. Reproduced from salvaged steel and remade wooden blow-molds, the piece was blown in the glass-working school (now the Glassmaking Secondary School in Valašské Meziříčí) that once trained workers for the now-dissolved company. Inspired by seeing layered sandstone in a local glass-sand quarry where one can read the layers of history, I then kiln-formed the lights together—like stone—using heat, pressure, and time. Fossilized amongst the layers are: mid-1800’s era petroleum lamps, a flame-shape rumored to have been used for lighting on the Titanic, 1950’s era linear textured sheaths from a theater, a 1930’s paper-like punctuated sphere and 1970’s era smooth chess piece replicas. The project embeds not only physical remnants from the lighting company in the form of reproduced glass lights, but also political, cultural, and technical shifts that occurred through the company’s life which swept through the world wars and dramatic swings of political systems. The resulting form is treated much like the commodification of stone by cutting and “book matching” the pieces, living somewhere between commodity and, like stone and its material derivative glass, a precious embodied record of history.

Many thanks to the Fulbright Commission and to the many who have shared their time, talents, and teaching in the Glass Design Studio at Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín and High-School for Applied Arts and Glassmaking in Valašské Meziříčí.

Exhibited in Z povahy věcí/ The Nature of Things, 2023 (Galerie Sýpka in Valašské Meziříčí, Czechia), piece in group exhibition.

	Processing Ash (In progress)
This video is an unfolding story of material mobility that overlays narratives of present and past. It documents the process of making glass as a way to create a signature of specific locations and wildfire events in north-central Colorado. Each glass sample was created from sand and ash residue collected from different locations that had been affected by wildfire. The recipe itself is an adaptation of “forest glass”—a late medieval European glass made of sand and wood ash. The video toggles between two parallel narratives atop the video of glassmaking. The first narrative catapults the viewer to the medieval ages through the beginnings of forest glass production and its larger implications over time as the glassmaking process intersects with trade, politics, and global expansion. Arching forward from the thousand-year material history, the second narrative recounts the personal narrative of seeing a place change due to increased wildfire. Despite the drastically different time scales and locations, are there links between the nearly thousand-year gap of the material narratives? Can a seemingly benign agent, such as a glass recipe, become an inadvertent catalyst, influencing centuries away from its own origins?

	Ash Xylarium
The Ash Xylarium explores the relationship of fire, memory, and the feedback loop of creation and loss in the north-central Colorado Rocky Mountains. From childhood to revisiting as an adult, the project stems from the artist’s observations of seeing landscapes transform due to more frequent and intense wildfire. Fire is a catalyzing medium of loss and creation—a feedback loop—and is explored here through past, present, and future. Using glass as a material that embodies this feedback loop within every facet of its lifecycle, the story engages the glassmaking process from glass recipe, form-making using glass’ high-fidelity reprographic quality, and reforming through glass’ ability to transform infinitely. Cast glass books capture ghosted figures of trees native to the fire-affected areas that do not regenerate post-fire as easily as they have previously. The drawers present vignettes of loss/creation cycle: the bark beetle as contributor to the loss of millions of acres of trees from the mid-nineties through now; videos capturing the moment of ignition; slides showing parts of different tree species—cones, needles, twigs—before and after they turn into ash; and “forest glass”, an adaptation of a medieval glass recipe that embodies place through fusing wildfire ash and sand.

Retelling a Landscape Through the Alchemy of Recasting
This project is an acknowledgment of reshaped landscapes while also understanding that this moment of time is only relevant to my own human lifespan and perspective. The work embodies unmet expectations when one confronts a memory landscape of their, or my, childhood. Specifically, I am discussing the chasm between reality and memory through a recent return to my childhood home in Colorado, and was met by two of the largest wildfires in the state’s history. This project takes a moment to digest that loss, of what was known, what was not, and can no longer be known: forests, trees, and other time-honed flora. The construct of mirage and memory are at play–both hold various truths in relation to distance between viewer and that which is viewed. Glass is used as a way to explore recasting based on the ability both to shape-shift and maintain a material memory. Studies include casting and recasting trees to explore various stages of transmutation from one material to another: adapting historic glass recipes that embody loss and creation; building protective (but futile) glass cocoons that suggest physical and metaphorical change; and employing Schlieren imaging to explore the role temperature plays in how “recasting” is perceived. I am exploring a feedback loop—a recasting—between creation and loss where material, time, place, and scale transform into different forms both physically and through memory. Recasting is the transmutation—or change from one material to another—which physically embodies a vast slurry of eras, material, histories, places, and scales.
